Fairway Flyers shine despite rain

Even a little rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of Damian Borges from the Brampton team as he takes a shot during the Special Olympics Golf Tournament at Peel Village Golf Course on Saturday.

BRAMPTON- The rain did not put a damper on the Brampton Special Olympics Fairway Flyers Golf Team third annual Golf Invitational on Saturday at Peel Village Golf Club.

Coaches Julie Borges and Margie Abbott, thank for their outstanding assistance CPGA professional Trevor Killam, recreation coordinator Lee Furlotte and the staff at Peel Village for welcoming the 52 Special Olympics golfers from Brampton, London, Aurora, Port Colborne, Mississauga, Oakville, Belleville and Orillia along with the 24 volunteer scorers.

Despite the on-again, off-again rain the golfers persevered and completed their nine-holes with a positive attitude. The Brampton golfers had great finishes.

In the female division Brampton’s Yvonne Vanadrichem was second with Robyn Lewis third.

Among male golfers, Jason Walker was second and Richard Moriarty third in Flight 1. In Flight 2 Vince Grutta was first. Flight 3 winners included Matthew Borkowski first and Daniel Burgess second. In Flight 5 Douglas Furtado was third while Andrew Brooks took third in Flight 7.

Brampton’s Special Olympics golfer Richard Moriarty has also been selected to compete among 200 golfers from across North America in the 14th annual Special Olympics North American Golf Invitational (SONA) in October in New Jersey.

He earned his spot based on his scores during the 2013 Summer Provincial Games in York Region in July. Caddying for him will be long-time dedicated coach of Brampton Special Olympics, Neil Lewis.

The Brampton Special Olympians congratulate them and know they will do Brampton proud and above all with follow the Athletes Oath, “Let me win. But If I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
